OPEN EVENING AND AGM
Come and hear more – and see some of the items – from this fascinating social history collection made up of hundreds of objects from Malton & Norton
COMMUNITY HOUSE, WENTWORTH STREET, MALTON
March 10th from 6.30pm
A GLIMPSE into the treasure chest of artefacts that make up Malton and Norton’s past is on offer as a social history collection opens its doors to visitors.
The Woodhams-Stone Collection is holding an open evening giving visitors a rare opportunity to look at some of the items collected by Norton-born and bred Sid Woodhams and John Stone over the last 50 years.
Di Keal, chairman of the trustees at the Woodhams-Stone Collection, said: “Since we set up the steering committee to manage the Woodhams-Stone Collection in 2011 we have made huge strides in cataloguing and assessing the many hundreds of items that we hold.
“It has been a very successful period for the collection in terms of progressing with the Heritage Lottery-funded project and increasing public access to this fascinating social history collection through exhibitions, attending events and giving talks.
“We hope that local people will come along to our open evening to hear about just how much progress we have made and our next exciting project focussing on Ryedale’s agricultural history.”
The Woodhams- Stone steering committee is also keen to recruit new trustees to join the board.
Di said: “We are a small, but hard working group at the moment and need to increase our numbers. We are looking for people who care about the history of our twin towns and want to promote the collection and help secure its future in Malton and Norton.
“We would also welcome more ‘hands on’ volunteers willing to work with our staff team on cataloguing items from the Collection, transferring everything into museum standard shortage and preparing for future exhibitions.”
The free open evening and annual meeting will take place at Community House, Wentworth Street, on Thursday, March 10, at 7pm. Refreshments will be served from 6.30pm.
Anyone wanting to joins the trustees or volunteer with the Woodhams-Stone Collection who is unable to attend the event should phone 01653 228070.
