Last Thursday Norton On Derwent went to the polls to elect the local Councillor to the North Yorkshire County Council. Elizabeth Shields, Liberal Democrat, won the seat with 564 votes, followed by Stephen Shaw, Conservative, with 504 votes, then Peter Walker, Independent, 344 votes, Emma Lund, UKIP, 343 votes and Karl Reveley, Labour, 187 votes. The seat is a Liberal Democrat gain from the Conservatives. Councillor Shields added she was going to focus her attention on keeping Norton Library. Councillor Shields also said it was important to keep track of the amount of funding directed to Primary Schools highlighting the early years education as very important. No doubt there will be many issues that will surface that Councillor Sheilds will have to deal with which will be of interest to Norton residents.
